A little over a year later, the Los Angeles chapter of the FBI was informed that the national office of the Bureau

has observed for some time that Vaughn, a well-known television actor and star of the television program Man from U.N.C.L.E., has actively supported and participated as a speaker in various demonstrations and programs protesting U.S. involvement in Vietnam. In this regard, he has had the opportunity to associate and work with individuals who are a part of the Communist movement and who are extensively engaged in protesting U.S. policy in Vietnam.

As a result of his activities and in view of his prominence as a nationally known television actor, you are instructed to promptly prepare and submit a report on Vaughn along with your recommendation concerning his inclusion in the Security or Reserve Index, if warranted. Your investigation should be limited to a review of your indices and contacts with logical confidential informants and established sources only in order to determine the extent of subject’s involvement, if any, with the Communist movement. No additional active investigation is to be conducted in this matter without prior Bureau authority.
